China penalizes ten individuals for alleged misinformation on Tibet mudslide
Chinese authorities have penalized ten individuals for allegedly spreading misinformation online regarding a catastrophic mudslide and flash flood in the Himalayan border region between Tibet and Nepal. The crackdown, part of the 'Clean Internet 2026' operation, involved penalties ranging from monetary fines to administrative detention of up to ten days. Human Rights Watch has accused Beijing of censoring information and preventing journalists from accessing the affected areas or contacting victims' families. Critics and Tibetan exile groups allege that the Chinese government is minimizing the true scale of the devastation in the Gyirong Port area.
