China plans $165 billion hydroelectric megaproject in Tibet

China is planning an ambitious hydroelectric megaproject on the Tibetan Plateau, with an estimated value of $165 billion. The proposed complex aims for a capacity of 60 gigawatts, which would make it approximately three times more powerful than the Three Gorges Dam.

While the project is intended to bolster China's renewable energy capacity, it raises significant concerns regarding environmental impact, social consequences, and effects on downstream nations. Previous dam constructions in the region have already resulted in the displacement of over 120,000 people.

China currently has 193 hydroelectric projects in various stages of development, with a potential total capacity of 270 gigawatts. The nation's energy policy continues to balance the rapid expansion of renewables, such as solar and hydro, with the continued use of traditional coal-fired power plants.
