China nominates Song Li for WHO Director-General position

China has announced its intention to nominate Song Li, a senior public health official, for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Song Li, who has over 20 years of experience in maternal and child health policy and international cooperation, would be the second Chinese national to lead the agency, following Margaret Chan.

The nomination comes at a time of significant transition and financial instability for the WHO. Following the withdrawal of the United States, which previously provided approximately 22 percent of the organization's annual budget, the WHO has been forced to undergo major restructuring, including cutting thousands of jobs and reducing senior management positions. While China has pledged additional funding, it has not fully covered the deficit left by Washington.

The move is viewed by diplomats as an effort by Beijing to expand its influence within United Nations agencies and fill the leadership vacuum created by reduced U.S. engagement. The full list of leadership nominees is expected to be released in early November following the conclusion of regional committee meetings. Other candidates have already been identified from nations including Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Qatar, Botswana, Indonesia, and Spain.
