China pledges to defend Iran's legitimate interests
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing to discuss bilateral relations and regional stability in the Middle East. Wang stated that China is prepared to defend the ‘legitimate rights and interests’ of Iran, emphasizing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
Addressing regional tensions, Wang called on both Iran and the United States to act ‘rationally’ and exercise restraint. He urged both parties to return to the memorandum of understanding signed in June through Pakistani mediation and to restructure negotiation mechanisms. Wang also expressed concern regarding the spread of tension to Yemen and the Red Sea, calling for measures to ensure the rapid reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maintain the stability of international energy and supply chains.
The meeting took place ahead of President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States in late September.
