China promotes Global Development Initiative and climate resilience at UN

Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a congratulatory letter to the high-level dialogue marking the 5th anniversary of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Xi noted that over the past five years, GDI cooperation projects have been implemented in more than 120 countries, aiming to support the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Separately, at a high-level meeting in New York regarding climate resilience, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Sun Lei, called for nations to pursue green, low-carbon development paths. He highlighted recent climate-related disasters, specifically a glacier collapse near the China-Nepal border that caused significant casualties in both nations. China provided emergency assistance, including rescue experts and satellite data, to Nepal. Sun emphasized the need for international cooperation in early warning systems and urged developed nations to fulfill funding obligations for loss and damage mechanisms to support developing countries in their energy transitions.
