China proposes new regulations for automotive technology
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has launched a public consultation process for draft regulations targeting new automotive technologies. The proposed rules focus on safety, operation, and user interfaces to mitigate risks associated with rapid technological integration in vehicles.
Key areas of focus include advanced seating systems, such as zero-gravity, rotating, and flat-folding seats. The MIIT proposes stricter crash tests, anti-pinch mechanisms, and reliability standards, suggesting that mobile seat functions be prohibited while the vehicle is in motion.
The draft also addresses driver distraction caused by excessive or complex in-car displays, including large central screens and sophisticated Head-Up Displays (HUD). Notably, the regulations propose a ban on foldable and flexible screens, a move that could impact tech-focused brands like Xiaomi and Huawei’s HIMA. Additionally, the ministry aims to regulate lighting systems to prevent users from displaying unvetted messages via LED headlights or taillights.
