China proposes robotic fortress concept for South China Sea defense

Researchers from the China Coast Guard Academy and Dalian Maritime University have proposed a maritime defense concept termed a ‘robotic fortress’ to protect islands and reefs in the South China Sea. The strategy involves a coordinated, multi-domain network of aerial drones, surface vessels, and underwater unmanned platforms designed to function as a closed-loop defense system.

The proposal aims to counter the threat of low-cost drone swarm attacks, which researchers argue can overwhelm traditional human-centered defense systems. By utilizing artificial intelligence, these autonomous platforms could monitor maritime environments and identify threats even if communication links are disrupted. The researchers cited the effectiveness of asymmetric drone tactics in recent conflicts as a primary driver for this shift toward unmanned, multi-layered surveillance and response.

This research was published in the journal Command Control & Simulation, which is overseen by Chinese state shipbuilding entities. The concept represents a potential shift from conventional manned island defense to a more cost-effective, automated model of maritime security.
