China proposes stricter regulations for EV interior technology
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is proposing new regulations to curb distracting technologies in vehicles, prioritizing driver focus and physical controls. The proposed measures include a potential blanket ban on flexible or folding displays and mandatory safety assessments for large infotainment systems, secondary displays, and heads-up displays (HUDs) to evaluate their impact on driver distraction and crashworthiness.
Under the proposed GB 4094 standard, manufacturers may be required to provide physical buttons for approximately 19 essential functions, such as turn signals, windshield wipers, headlights, and gear selection (P, R, N, D). The regulations also aim to restrict voice commands for critical safety operations like opening doors or hoods.
Other features under scrutiny include ‘zero gravity’ seats, which may be restricted while a vehicle is in motion, and customizable LED daytime running lights. If enacted, vehicles manufactured from January 1, 2027, must comply, with existing models required to meet standards by July 1, 2027, to avoid potential recalls or production halts.
