China proposes using robot dogs to assist lunar astronauts

Researchers from the China Academy of Space Technology have proposed a plan to use robotic dogs to assist astronauts at future lunar research stations. The blueprint suggests a crew of three astronauts working alongside intelligent machines to expand the frontiers of human spaceflight.

In this model, one astronaut would direct two robot dogs during surface exploration, while a second astronaut collects rock samples and performs scientific tasks. A third crew member would stay inside a pressurized vehicle to coordinate the mission and control other robots. The autonomous robots would be responsible for patrolling stations, detecting hazards, extracting resources like water ice and minerals, and maintaining habitats by regulating air and temperature.

Beyond physical labor, the robots could assist with routine tasks such as cleaning, tending plants, and meal preparation. They are also envisioned as companions to help alleviate the psychological strain of long-term isolation. However, researchers noted significant challenges, including the need to train AI in an environment with scarce practical data and the requirement to build new communication and navigation infrastructure on the Moon.
