China pushes EU toward balanced trade as deficit concerns grow

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a delegation of European Parliament lawmakers in Beijing that China and the EU should aim for an “upward dynamic balance” in their bilateral trade, emphasizing partnership and mutual interests. He said China is ready to enhance coordination on global issues and noted that the EU is considering measures to curb its growing trade deficit with China. Trade talks under a China‑EU trade and investment consultation mechanism are scheduled for later this year, with the EU trade chief seeking results by October.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian echoed the call for a pragmatic approach, urging France and Germany to adopt a rational stance and promote EU‑China cooperation. He highlighted that trade imbalances should be resolved through dialogue, that China does not seek a trade surplus, and that protectionism is not a solution. Both officials stressed adherence to WTO rules and the goal of mutually beneficial, sustainable trade.
