China Railway subcontractor fatally electrocuted in Guyana
A subcontractor working for China Railway First Group was fatally electrocuted early Friday morning in Sophia, Guyana. The incident occurred around 01:00 hrs while the individual was conducting pipe-laying works near Congress Place.
The accidental contact with a live electricity network caused Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) to experience service interruptions. The Sophia F3 feeder tripped, affecting Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville, for approximately one hour, while the Sophia F6 feeder went offline for about 30 minutes, impacting customers in Areas A to E, Field Sophia.
GPL issued a statement expressing condolences to the deceased’s family and reminded all contractors to adhere to safety protocols. This includes coordinating with GPL before starting work, identifying electrical hazards, and ensuring protective measures are in place.
