China ramps up naval and aerial pressure around Taiwan

China has markedly increased its military activity around Taiwan. Taiwan's defence ministry reported that in June Chinese forces operated 21 aircraft, six warships and two official vessels near the island, with 20 of the aircraft crossing the Strait's median line. The number of Chinese official vessels observed rose 83% from May, reaching 55 sightings in June.

In addition, the People's Liberation Army carried out live‑fire naval drills near Taiwan’s coast and, for the first time, a PLA helicopter crossed the median line, accompanied by a Chinese military drone. Taiwan responded with its own aircraft, navy ships and coastal missile systems to monitor and counter the operations.

The heightened pressure follows statements by Taiwan President Lai Ching‑te asserting the island will not act as a subordinate to Beijing, prompting Chinese authorities to label his remarks "reckless" and to expand their presence in the strategically vital waterway.
