China rare earth suppliers halt shipments to US ahead of Xi-Trump summit

Chinese rare earth suppliers have reportedly begun halting shipments to American companies, a development occurring ahead of a scheduled summit between President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington. Some suppliers have refused shipments since early August, reportedly due to fears of repercussions from Beijing following sanctions imposed on the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), a US-based supply chain monitor.

Reports indicate that Chinese firms are increasingly wary of punishment for complying with global mineral supply chain audit programs, such as the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). Some companies have also declined shipments to avoid the risk of materials being resold to banned entities.

These supply disruptions coincide with broader economic tensions. While China has implemented measures to prime liquidity within its domestic financial system, the potential for export bans on rare earths remains a significant geopolitical lever. The issue is expected to be a primary agenda item during the upcoming White House meeting.
