China reaches 5.29 million registered physicians
China's registered physician count has reached 5.29 million by the end of 2025, exceeding the targets set by the country's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025). According to the National Health Commission, there has been a notable increase in the proportion of physicians holding postgraduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as those in senior positions, compared to 2012.
In 2025, medical institutions in China provided over 10.6 billion patient treatments. The National Health Commission reported that China's key health indicators have reached leading levels among high-middle-income countries and nations with populations exceeding 100 million.
The Commission emphasized that medical quality and safety remain priorities due to their direct link to social stability and public welfare. Moving forward, the agency intends to promote high-quality development of medical professionals and improve the structure of the healthcare workforce.
