China offers deeper security cooperation to 41 African nations
During the 4th China-Africa Peace and Security Forum held in Beijing, Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun pledged deeper military and security cooperation with 41 African nations and the African Union. The initiative aims to address shared regional threats, including violent extremism, terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, and maritime security challenges along vital trade routes.
Key components of this expanded defense relationship include joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and military training. Previous frameworks have included plans to train thousands of African soldiers and officers. The cooperation seeks to establish mechanisms for defense exchange based on equality and mutual benefit. While China aims to protect its interests on the continent, the African Union has emphasized that African security must remain led by Africans, focusing on concrete results in border management and logistics.
