China recalls 4.3 million electric vehicles including Tesla models
Tesla and eight other automakers are recalling approximately 4.3 million electric vehicles in China due to safety concerns regarding emergency door exits. This represents the largest automotive recall in the country's history.
The issue involves mechanical emergency door handles that may be difficult to locate or operate following a collision, particularly if the vehicle's electrical system fails. Corrective measures include software updates, warning labels, and improvements to the visibility and operation of the handles.
Tesla is the largest participant in the recall, affecting nearly 3 million vehicles including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced that the recall process is expected to begin on September 25.
This massive recall follows increased scrutiny from Beijing regarding safety standards in the electric vehicle industry. Additionally, China has announced a ban on flush-mounted door handles starting in 2027, making it the first nation to phase out a design popularized by Tesla and widely adopted by domestic manufacturers.
