China regulators issue guidance to online hotel booking platforms
China's State Administration for Market Regulation and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism held an administrative guidance meeting on September 15 regarding the online hotel booking platform industry. The meeting aimed to ensure platforms fulfill their compliance responsibilities, mitigate competition risks, and maintain a healthy tourism market.
Regulators instructed major platforms, including Meituan, Douyin, JD.com, Ctrip, Tongcheng, and Fliggy, to strictly adhere to the Anti-Monopoly Law, the Anti-Unfair Competition Law, the E-commerce Law, and the Tourism Law. Specifically, companies were directed to self-inspect and prevent issues such as exclusive cooperation agreements and ‘lowest price on the web’ practices that drive excessive competition.
In response to the guidance, several platforms, including Ctrip, issued statements pledging to implement compliance requirements. Ctrip emphasized its commitment to respecting merchant rights, following regulatory decisions, and fostering a sustainable industry ecosystem through fair competition.
