China rejects EU accusations of industrial overcapacity

China's Ministry of Commerce said Beijing rejects the European Union's claim that Chinese industry suffers from excess capacity. Spokesperson He Yadong argued the term "excess capacity" could equally apply to European exports such as cars, medicines, wine and cosmetics, and warned the EU against applying "double standards" in trade matters. He cautioned that any discriminatory measures targeting Chinese firms or products would prompt firm counter‑measures from China. The EU is reportedly considering new trade tools to address what it sees as overcapacity in Chinese sectors, part of broader tensions over subsidies, electric vehicles and market access.

The remarks were made at a regular press briefing, emphasizing the desire for dialogue and consultation to maintain stable economic relations between the two parties.
