Ladakh territorial dispute: China rejects India's naming of 28 strategic locations

India has officially standardised the names of 28 strategic geographical features in the Union Territory of Ladakh for inclusion on the Survey of India maps. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to facilitate accurate recognition and increase public awareness of these locations, which include mountain peaks, passes, glaciers, and valleys.

China has strongly rejected the move, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning describing the naming process as “illegal and invalid.” Beijing maintains that it does not recognise the Union Territory of Ladakh and asserts that the areas in the western sector of the China-India boundary belong to China.

The list of identified locations includes several sensitive areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), such as Gogra and Hot Spring, which were significant friction points during the 2020 military standoff. Other named features include Kanishka Peak, Zorawar Peak, and the Shkorga Valley.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed China’s objections, reaffirming that Ladakh is an “integral and inalienable part of India” and stating that no amount of denial from Beijing can change this established fact. The naming exercise was conducted in consultation with the Ladakh administration and local stakeholders.
