China rejects U.S. “Economic D-Day” sanctions against Iran

China has formally rejected the United States’ “Economic D-Day” initiative, a strategy launched by President Donald Trump aimed at imposing unprecedented economic pressure and isolation on Iran. The U.S. approach seeks to disrupt the financial pathways used by the Tehran regime and has warned that countries or companies providing economic support to Iran could face serious repercussions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that sanctions and coercion are not effective tools for resolving the crisis. Beijing has urged all involved parties to seek responsible, political, and diplomatic solutions rather than unilateral economic measures, which China claims lack backing from international law or the United Nations.

Despite U.S. threats, Beijing appears to maintain a position of strength. China has bolstered its economic resilience by increasing crude oil imports from Russia and building petroleum stocks. Additionally, China holds significant leverage through its control over rare earth minerals, which are critical to U.S. industries, including the defense sector.
