China rejects US sanctions threats regarding Iran trade

China has responded to United States threats of sanctions against countries maintaining trade relations with Iran, stating that economic pressure and sanctions are not solutions to regional issues. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that Beijing will take all necessary and appropriate measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

The diplomatic friction follows statements from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who warned that nations continuing to trade with Iran could face sanctions themselves. The US has specifically called on China to join efforts to economically isolate Iran.

China remains a primary purchaser of Iranian oil. Despite regional tensions and maritime blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, China's imports of Iranian oil were approximately 534,000 barrels per day in August, a decrease from 823,000 barrels per day in July. China has urged all parties to adopt responsible behavior and resolve conflicts through political and diplomatic channels rather than measures that could damage global economic stability.
