China reported 522,000 new COVID-19 cases in July, according to the country’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The reported figures include 487 severe cases and one death.

Health authorities described the increase as a regular cyclical wave, noting that the impact was exacerbated by increased summer travel. The disease has been reclassified as a Category B illness, which is considered recurrent with one or two outbreaks per year. While infection numbers have shown a fluctuating upward trend, experts indicate the growth rate has slowed as the outbreak reaches a plateau.

Medical specialists attribute the surge to waning population immunity—as most individuals had not been infected in over six months—and continuous mutations of the virus that bypass existing antibody protection. The Omicron variant, specifically the NB.1.8.1 strain and its sublineages, is the predominant strain currently in circulation. Experts noted there is no evidence that the virus has become more pathogenic and expect cases to begin decreasing by late August.
