China reports 522,000 COVID-19 cases in July amid infection surge

China is experiencing a significant surge in COVID-19 infections. According to reports from the National Health Commission and the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, the country recorded 522,000 new confirmed cases in July. This represents a more than sixfold increase from the 79,000 cases reported in June.

The China CDC stated that the nation is currently at the “peak plateau phase of this fluctuation in the epidemic.” While case numbers have risen sharply, the severity appears relatively low; July saw 487 severe cases and one reported death. Genomic sequencing indicates that Omicron variants, specifically NB.1.8.1 and its sublineages, are the primary strains in circulation.

Experts attribute the spike to waning population immunity and increased domestic and global travel during the summer season. The positivity rate for influenza-like cases in outpatient and emergency departments has also shown a continuous upward trend, rising from 8.2 percent to 21.2 percent over recent weeks.
