China reports 79,000 COVID-19 cases as infections outpace flu

China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention recorded about 79,000 confirmed COVID-19 infections in June, including 130 severe cases and one death. The surge is linked to the Omicron NB.1.8.1 sub‑variant, which now dominates reported cases.

During the week of 13‑19 July, 16.3% of respiratory tests were positive for COVID‑19, surpassing the 12.6% positivity rate for influenza. Health officials attribute the rapid spread to summer behaviours—air‑conditioned indoor spaces, increased travel, and prolonged indoor gatherings—that facilitate transmission similarly to winter conditions. Authorities have urged vulnerable groups, especially the elderly and those with pre‑existing conditions, to resume protective measures such as wearing masks in public and medical settings.
