China reports 79,000 COVID-19 cases in June 2026

Mainland China’s CDC recorded an estimated 79,000 newly confirmed COVID‑19 infections in June 2026, more than double May’s 21,861 cases. The June tally included 130 severe patients and one death, all reported as having underlying conditions. Genomic sequencing of 3,741 valid samples from all provinces showed only Omicron sub‑lineages, with NB.1.8.1 predominating, and no new variants of concern were identified.

Sentinel testing in hospital outpatient and emergency departments placed COVID‑19 positivity at 9.6%, behind influenza (11.6%) and slightly ahead of enteroviruses (9.1%). In response, China’s CDC advised the public to wear masks in crowded settings, on public transport, and during medical visits, especially for older adults, pregnant women, children and those with chronic illnesses. The guidance also reiterated standard hygiene measures and urged vaccination against respiratory diseases.

The data sparked renewed discussion on Chinese social media, with some net‑users questioning the completeness of official figures and emphasizing that COVID‑19 remains present, citing concerns about long‑term health effects.
