China reports progress in rural poverty alleviation
A report from China's State Council, submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, indicates significant progress in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization.
According to the report, the per capita disposable income of rural residents in counties removed from poverty lists rose from 12,588 yuan (approximately $1,855) in 2020 to 18,627 yuan in 2025, representing an average annual growth rate of 8.2%. The report highlights improvements in rural infrastructure and public services, alongside a reduction in the development gap between regions.
Efforts to stabilize employment for those who have exited poverty have resulted in over 32 million people securing jobs. Despite these gains, the report acknowledges ongoing challenges, including the risk of people falling back into poverty and the fragile development foundations in less-developed areas. Future strategies will integrate regular assistance into rural revitalization, focusing on vulnerable populations and underdeveloped regions through a combination of development-oriented support and social security systems.
