China reports COVID-19 surge, cases outpace influenza in July

In July 2026 China experienced a notable rise in COVID‑19 infections, with the disease becoming the leading respiratory illness detected by sentinel hospitals, overtaking seasonal influenza. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) reported a test‑positivity rate of 16.3% among patients with flu‑like symptoms during the week of 13‑19 July, increasing to 20.3% in the following week. The increase was most pronounced in southern provinces and affected people aged 15‑59 the most.

The surge followed 79,000 confirmed cases in June, including 130 severe cases and one death. The dominant strain remains the Omicron sub‑variant NB.1.8.1, with no evidence of a new variant posing additional public‑health risk. Most patients exhibited mild symptoms and the rise has not strained health‑care services. Experts, such as virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco, describe the trend as a seasonal summer wave, reminding that SARS‑CoV‑2 continues to circulate globally.

Authorities advise continued vigilance, especially for the elderly and those with pre‑existing conditions, but have not announced new restrictions.
