China researchers identify new tick-borne virus ALTNV
Researchers in China have identified a new tick-borne virus, named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), which causes flu-like illnesses. The discovery, published in The New England Journal of Medicine by scientists from the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity in Beijing, aims to explain why many patients exhibiting symptoms of Dabie-Bandavirus (DBV) previously tested negative for known pathogens.
Symptoms associated with ALTNV include fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal distress, and potential organ damage. Medical experts, including Dr. Tyler Evans of the Wellness Equity Alliance, have noted that the discovery addresses a gap where thousands of patients presented with classic tick-borne symptoms but yielded negative results on standard tests.
Concerns are rising regarding the potential for international spread, as the tick species responsible for transmitting the virus has already established itself in the United States.
