China researchers propose nuclear-powered tank with electromagnetic cannon
Chinese defense researchers have proposed a conceptual framework for a futuristic 60-ton armored vehicle powered by a miniature nuclear reactor and equipped with an electromagnetic cannon. The research, detailed in the journal Acta Armamentarii, outlines a long-term technological trajectory extending beyond 2045.
The project involves a collaboration between the Beijing Institute of Technology, the National Reference Laboratory for Special Vehicle Design and Manufacturing Integration Technologies, and the Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group. The proposal suggests a three-phase development plan.
Phase one, targeted for completion by 2035, focuses on integrating electromagnetic weaponry into existing diesel-electric chassis. This stage would utilize a 1,500 hp diesel generator combined with flywheels and supercapacitors to power a 10 MJ electromagnetic gun capable of striking targets up to 150 kilometers away.
Phase two, envisioned for 2045, aims to increase power and range. The ultimate vision involves replacing conventional engines with a compact 10 MW liquid-metal-cooled nuclear reactor to power a 50 MJ electromagnetic cannon. This advanced system could theoretically accelerate projectiles to 3.5 kilometers per second, achieving a range of up to 450 kilometers.
