China reviews legal law amendment to boost overseas services
Chinese legislators are reviewing a draft amendment to the Lawyers Law intended to strengthen legal services related to overseas affairs. Huang Haihua, a spokesperson for the Legislative Affairs Commission of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, announced that the proposal aims to enhance the training of lawyers specializing in international legal matters and encourage greater international cooperation.
The draft includes provisions to allow legal professionals from the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions to practice in nine cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, provided they pass the designated professional qualification examination.
The amendment also seeks to promote public interest legal services and ensure full legal representation for lawyers in criminal proceedings. The draft underwent public consultation from June 26 to July 25 and is scheduled for a second reading during an NPC Standing Committee session held between August 25 and 28.
