China sanctions ministers from Belize and Paraguay over Taiwan ties

China has imposed formal sanctions against Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca and Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication Gustavo Villate. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the measures on Monday, citing the need to protect China’s national sovereignty and oppose Taiwan separatist activities.

The sanctions target the officials due to their governments' continued diplomatic recognition of Taiwan. The measures include freezing any assets or property held by the ministers within mainland China and denying them entry visas to China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Additionally, Chinese individuals and organizations are prohibited from engaging in any transactions or cooperation with the sanctioned officials.

In response, Belizean officials stated that the minister was acting in the national interest and rejected the unilateral coercive measures. Paraguay’s Minister Villate defended his country's sovereignty over its digital infrastructure, asserting that external sanctions would not influence Paraguay's technological decisions or its cooperation with Taiwan. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the move as blatant interference in the sovereignty of other nations.
