China sanctions ministers from Paraguay and Belize over Taiwan ties

The Chinese government has imposed sanctions on two Latin American ministers, Gustavo Emigdio Villate Samaniego of Paraguay and Francis Fonseca of Belize, due to their activities related to Taiwan. The measures, announced on October 12, include the freezing of assets, prohibitions on transactions with Chinese organizations, and entry restrictions to China.

Beijing justified the decision by claiming the officials engaged in activities that interfere with China’s internal affairs, specifically by supporting Taiwanese authorities in efforts to promote independence. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated the actions serve to “punish them and warn others.”

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña addressed the sanctions following a meeting with CIA Director John Ratcliffe in Washington. Peña admitted that his government faces pressure from China to alter its relations with Taiwan but asserted that Paraguay remains sovereign and will not change its convictions due to external pressure.
