China seeks deeper partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean
China is seeking to deepen its partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to promote reforms in global governance and build a more equitable multilateral system. During the “Linjia 7 Salon” in Beijing, Qiu Xiaoqi, China’s special representative for Latin American affairs, emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Global South and the region.
Qiu stated that China does not engage in ideological divisions regarding the political shifts within LAC nations, maintaining a principle of non-interference in internal affairs. He noted that China’s commitment to developing friendly relations remains unchanged regardless of whether regional governments are left- or right-leaning. Additionally, China expressed opposition to external interference and the U.S. embargo on Cuba.
Economically, China aims to align its Belt and Road Initiative with the development strategies of Latin American countries, focusing on trade, investment, green energy, and the digital economy. Trade between China and the region grew by 19.1% from January to August this year, while Latin American exports to China increased by 25.9%. China is also working to implement “small and beautiful” welfare projects across the region.
