China sets 51.3 Tb/s fiber‑optic record and expands 10 G broadband pilots

China has achieved a new world record for data transmission speed, reaching 51.3 terabits per second over hollow‑core fiber‑optic cable. The breakthrough promises lower latency and ultra‑high‑capacity links that could accelerate artificial‑intelligence workloads and next‑generation data‑center operations.

At the same time, Chinese operators such as Huawei and China Unicom are testing fixed‑line 10 gigabit‑per‑second (10 G) broadband services using 50 G‑PON technology. Pilot deployments in cities like Xiong’an demonstrate download speeds near 10 Gbps and upload rates around 1 Gbps, supporting applications including 8K video, virtual and augmented reality, cloud computing, autonomous vehicles, and smart‑city services. Together, the record speed and the rollout of 10 G networks position China as a leader in the emerging high‑speed internet infrastructure that underpins the digital economy.
