China showcases YJ-20 hypersonic missile launch from Type 052D destroyer

Chinese state media, specifically CCTV, recently released footage showing the launch of a YJ-20 anti-ship missile from a Type 052D destroyer. The footage, featured in a documentary preview, depicts a ‘cold launch’ where the missile exits the vertical launch system before its engine ignites above the deck.

The YJ-20 is described by regional and Western sources as a hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile, capable of speeds exceeding Mach 5. While previously associated with the larger Type 055 destroyers, its deployment on the Type 052D class—which consists of more numerous, mass-produced vessels—is noted for its strategic significance.

Specific technical details regarding the missile's range, speed, guidance systems, or warhead count have not been released by Chinese authorities. The Type 052D is a 7,500-ton class destroyer designed for air defense, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. The US Naval Institute estimated that at least 35 Type 052D units have been constructed to date.
