China tightens scrutiny of humanoid robot IPOs
Chinese regulators are tightening scrutiny on humanoid robot companies planning initial public offerings (IPOs). This regulatory shift follows the highly volatile market debut of Unitree Robotics, whose shares surged over fivefold on the Shanghai Exchange before dropping approximately 55% from their peak.
Authorities are using informal “window guidance” to raise the bar for approvals, effectively slowing the IPO pipeline for the sector. Regulators are specifically examining whether the high valuations and reported revenues of these companies reflect genuine, sustainable commercial demand or are primarily driven by government-sponsored projects and local authority-backed joint ventures. In some cases, local governments have provided up to 80–90% of initial investments in such projects.
Despite this increased oversight, China continues to treat “embodied intelligence”—AI systems capable of interacting with the physical world—as a strategic technological priority. The move is viewed as an attempt to curb speculative excess and protect investors without abandoning the long-term development of the robotics industry.
