China solar capacity surpasses coal capacity for the first time
China has reached a historic energy milestone as its installed solar capacity has surpassed its coal-fired power capacity for the first time. According to data from the National Energy Administration, solar capacity reached approximately 1,286 to 1,288 GW by the end of July, narrowly exceeding the 1,285 GW of coal capacity.
Solar energy now accounts for 31.5 percent of China's total installed power generation capacity. While coal remains a primary source for actual electricity generation, its share of total generation fell below 50 percent for the first time in the first half of the year, dropping to 49.7 percent. Combined, wind and solar power produced 24.6 percent of the country's electricity during the same period.
To support this transition and manage the growing demand for green energy, the National Energy Administration (NEA) announced plans to develop high-quality, next-generation power grids between 2026 and 2030. This initiative aims to build intelligent, digitalized, and stable grid infrastructures capable of integrating massive renewable energy loads. The NEA expects electricity demand to grow at an average annual rate of approximately 5 percent during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
