China solar expansion linked to declining bird biodiversity

A study published in the journal Science reveals that China’s rapid expansion of solar energy infrastructure is significantly reducing local bird biodiversity. Researchers analyzed 2,344 Chinese counties between 2014 and 2023, finding that for every standard deviation increase in the intensity of solar expansion policies, local bird biodiversity indices fell by 2.10%.

The primary driver of this decline is land conversion. Unlike in the United States or Europe, where solar farms are often placed on industrial sites or rooftops, China’s expansion has frequently reclaimed high-biodiversity grasslands and agricultural lands. This removes essential habitats used by birds for nesting, foraging, and shelter.

The research also highlights a phenomenon termed “inferior greening” or a “greenness illusion.” While satellite monitoring may show increased vegetation cover around solar installations, the researchers found this vegetation is often ecologically homogenous and less diverse than the original habitats. This creates a deceptive appearance of health from space that masks the degradation of the actual ecosystem on the ground.
