China launches mass production of homegrown DUV lithography tools
China has begun mass‑producing domestically developed immersion deep‑ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, a key chip‑making tool long dominated by Dutch supplier ASML. The effort is led by the state‑owned Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group, which has incorporated teams from several Chinese lithography startups. Initial output is limited to about five machines this year, with plans for roughly 20 more in 2027. The first deliveries are slated for leading Chinese fabs – Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), Hua Hong Semiconductor and ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). The machines still lag behind ASML’s equipment in performance and reliability and will require further testing before full‑scale deployment. Following the announcement, ASML’s shares fell between 4.6 % and more than 8 %. The development is part of Beijing’s semiconductor self‑sufficiency drive and could give Chinese chipmakers an alternative source if Western export restrictions tighten, although some critical components continue to be imported from Japan.
