China Steel Carbon opens Pingnan R&D Center in Taiwan

China Steel Carbon (中鋼碳素化學公司) inaugurated a new research and development centre at its Pingnan plant in Pingtung County on 29 May. The centre was built with an investment of NT$1.87 billion and is intended to bolster the company's high‑end carbon material portfolio, including lithium‑ion battery anode material, advanced carbon compounds and isotropic graphite.

Company chairman Huang Jian‑zhi said the facility will help the firm capture growth in AI servers, electric vehicles, energy‑storage systems and semiconductor markets. Officials from the Pingtung county government and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs attended the opening, highlighting the centre’s role in strengthening domestic supply chains and reducing reliance on imported key materials. The R&D hub is expected to support future capacity expansions and AI‑driven production processes.

The development positions Taiwan as a regional hub for advanced carbon materials, aiming to meet rising demand from global EV and AI‑related industries while promoting circular‑economy practices within the country’s steel and materials sectors.
