China Surpasses United States in Renewable Energy Development

Analysts note that under the Trump administration the United States has fallen behind China in renewable‑energy deployment. China is heavily investing in onshore and offshore wind and leads global solar‑panel research, benefitting from reduced U.S. collaboration after the 2018 “China Initiative.” The country now holds about 2.3 TW of installed renewable capacity, far exceeding Europe’s roughly 1 TW.

China’s energy plan targets a more than 65 % cut in carbon intensity by 2030, a 25 % share of non‑fossil energy consumption, and aims to meet new power demand primarily with clean sources. While China continues to operate coal plants for flexibility, it is seeking to limit their use. The United States, meanwhile, remains committed to fossil fuels, a strategy critics describe as a “fatal energy policy error” that could raise energy and climate costs.

The divergent paths of the two powers have implications for global energy markets and climate goals, as the U.S. policy landscape remains uncertain amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
