China-Taiwan Tensions Rise Over Coast Guard Patrols East of Taiwan

China's coast guard has deployed vessels to conduct "law enforcement patrols" in waters east of Taiwan, asserting the actions protect its national sovereignty and maritime rights. Taiwan's government says the Chinese ships have been harassing commercial vessels, demanding information on their origins and destinations, and claims the patrols violate its jurisdiction.

The dispute intensified after Japan and the Philippines announced official talks on their maritime boundaries, a move China says implicates waters near Taiwan.
