China targets 50% renewable energy share by 2030

China has outlined an ambitious energy strategy within its 15th Five-Year Plan for the 2026–2030 period, aiming for non-fossil fuel sources to account for more than 50% of its total energy mix.

Under this plan, renewable energy consumption is projected to reach approximately 1,800 million standard coal equivalents by 2030, up from an estimated 1,180 million in 2025. To support this transition, the country targets a total installed capacity of roughly 3,500 GW, with an annual generation of about 6,000 TWh. Solar and wind power are expected to be the primary drivers, with a combined capacity exceeding 2,800 GW and annual generation surpassing 4,000 TWh.

To address the challenges of grid stability and reliability, the strategy emphasizes significant investments in energy storage and transmission infrastructure. The plan includes measures to increase energy storage capacity to reserve 20% of electricity during peak summer and winter hours, a 10% increase over current levels. The initiative focuses on integrating generation, storage, and advanced grid technologies to ensure a consistent supply of electricity to homes and industrial centers.
