China targets mass solid-state battery deployment by 2030

China is pursuing a national roadmap to achieve large-scale deployment of solid-state batteries by 2030, aiming to maintain its global leadership in electric vehicle (EV) technology. While the goal is set for 2030, industry leaders suggest that mass-market adoption in affordable vehicles may take longer due to significant manufacturing and cost hurdles.

BYD plans to introduce its first solid-state battery vehicle in 2027. This initial rollout will not be a mass-market product; instead, the technology will debut in a high-end Yangwang luxury limousine. These vehicles are expected to be priced in the millions of yuan, targeting the elite segment of the market.

CATL, China’s largest battery manufacturer, has expressed caution regarding the timeline. Chairman Robin Zeng has noted that the technology currently sits at a level four out of nine on the readiness scale. CATL emphasizes that while research and manufacturing bases in China are extensive, engineering breakthroughs in materials and stability are required before solid-state batteries can reach millions of vehicles.
