China tests global stability through economic and military pressure
Geopolitical tensions are rising as China utilizes economic and military maneuvers to test international stability. In the economic sphere, analysts warn that trade disputes between the United States and Canada could inadvertently benefit China. By imposing tariffs on Canadian goods like steel, aluminum, and automobiles, the U.S. risks dismantling the integrated North American manufacturing base. This vulnerability allows China to exert economic coercion through its near-monopoly on critical components, such as rare earth magnets and semiconductors, which have previously disrupted production for major automakers like Ford and Honda.
Simultaneously, China is increasing its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Recent activities include joint naval and air patrols with Russia near Japan, increased Coast Guard presence near Taiwan, and missile tests over the Philippines. These actions appear to be testing the extent of U.S. commitment to its regional allies. While nations like Japan, Australia, and the Philippines are increasing defense spending, the lack of a collective security framework similar to NATO leaves these allies reliant on bilateral treaties and the unpredictable level of U.S. engagement in the region.
