China tests S4000 stratospheric wind energy system
China has successfully completed full-cycle flight testing for the S4000 Stratosphere Airborne Wind Energy System (SAWES), a high-altitude wind power technology. Developed by Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology in collaboration with Tsinghua University and the Institute of Aeronautics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the system is designed to operate at altitudes of up to 4,000 meters.
The technology utilizes a helium-filled aerostat, similar to a large dirigible, to lift wind-generating equipment into the stratosphere. At these heights, winds are significantly stronger, more stable, and more predictable than those available to traditional ground-based turbines. The electricity generated is transmitted back to the ground via a tether that serves both as a structural support and an electrical conductor.
The S4000 testing phase in northwestern China included ascent, position maintenance, power generation, and controlled recovery. This successful validation marks a transition from iterative development toward industrial engineering and mass production. The system follows the successful S2000 model, which operated at 2,000 meters and demonstrated the ability to connect directly to the local power grid.
