China tests world's largest 155mm naval gun

China's People's Liberation Army Navy is trialing a new 155mm naval gun that would become the largest of its kind worldwide. The gun, produced by state‑owned Norinco, weighs about 21.8 tonnes, can fire guided shells and features a radar‑stealth turret. Initial sea‑firing tests were observed aboard the test ship Wu Yunduo near Dalian, Liaoning, in early May, following earlier static trials on a 6,000‑tonne vessel in February 2026.

Manufacturing was completed in March 2025 and the system is intended to augment naval firepower for shore bombardment, especially in a potential amphibious operation against Taiwan. Analysts note that while modern navies have shifted toward missiles and unmanned systems, large‑caliber artillery can provide sustained support for landing forces and the destruction of coastal infrastructure. The development reflects China's effort to revive heavy naval artillery amid evolving maritime threats such as anti‑ship missiles and unmanned platforms.
