China threatens trade retaliation over French anti-fast fashion law

China has threatened commercial retaliation against France following the development of a French bill targeting ultra-fast fashion. Chinese authorities have denounced the proposed legislation, claiming it is discriminatory toward Chinese companies, specifically naming platforms such as Shein and Temu.

While the French government states the objective of the law is to combat textile overproduction and limit the environmental impact of disposable fashion, critics point out that the regulations primarily affect Chinese e-commerce platforms. This occurs despite the fact that many traditional French and European retailers also utilize Asian supply chains. The Chinese government expressed concerns that the French Senate has strengthened provisions specifically targeting Chinese online sales platforms, raising questions about whether the law targets specific actors based on their origin rather than general industry practices.
