China Three Gorges’ Rudong offshore wind farm surpasses 10 TWh milestone

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) announced that its 800 MW Jiangsu Rudong offshore wind project has surpassed 10 TWh (10 billion kWh) of cumulative electricity generation. Located in the Yellow Sea off Rudong County in Jiangsu Province, the project has been in full operation since 2021.

The facility is notable for being Asia’s first offshore wind project to utilize a ±400 kV flexible direct-current (DC) transmission system to deliver power to the shore. This technology is designed to overcome the distance and capacity constraints faced by conventional alternating current (AC) transmission as wind farms move into deeper waters. CTG reports that the DC system has reduced transmission losses by approximately 1.2 percentage points, resulting in cumulative cost savings exceeding CNY 735 million (approximately $109 million).

Since reaching full grid connection, the project has maintained an equipment availability rate of 99.5% over more than 1,600 days of operation. The total electricity produced is equivalent to the annual consumption of roughly four million households. Additionally, the project has reportedly saved approximately three million tonnes of standard coal and avoided 7.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
