China tightens exit regulations for citizens traveling abroad

China is implementing stricter exit and entry regulations that have increased scrutiny and anxiety for citizens traveling abroad. New rules, stemming from amendments to the Exit and Entry Administration Law promulgated by the State Council, are set to take effect on September 15.

Reports from Chinese nationals living in countries such as Singapore, Australia, and the United States indicate that authorities are demanding extensive personal documentation during visits home. Requirements have included proof of overseas employment, medical insurance, workplace photographs, and exact residential addresses of hosts abroad.

Authorities have expanded their ability to prevent departures based on suspected involvement in crimes, national security concerns, export controls, and technology regulations. Some travelers have reported being blocked at airports or facing intense police interrogations regarding the financial status and identities of their relatives living overseas, leading to fears that any perceived inaccuracy could result in a permanent ban from leaving the country.
